Cross-post from This Day (A History Show)
Quick reaction to last night's election. Glad to have Niki and Kellie by my side to help process, and offer some perspective about where we've been and where we're headed. -

Hey all, a quick note to tell you that we recorded an episode this morning to talk about Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election. I hope you’ll check it out, and if you think there’s someone who might appreciate this conversation, please forward this email to them.

Topics discussed:

  • How we’re feeling (not great!)

  • The world is made better by people who are very, very tired

  • Is this election the end of a historical period, or the beginning?

  • Progress and backlash

  • Did we just have a window of progress? Did it feel like one?

  • How you can find agency, meaning, and even hope outside of electoral politics

Video is up on YouTube, and it’s also in all your podcast feeds shortly.

Below are some posts that our team has shared this morning, I hope you’ll join the conversation as we process this moment.

I know intimately the costs of Trump in power. His rise in 2016 empowered white power groups, who marched on the town where I lived. I sawthem beat a man nearly to death; I was with the dead and injured after the car attack in Charlottesville. I lost autonomy over my reproductive health care. I made medical decisions knowing certain medications and birth control options would one day no longer be legal.

I grieve last night’s election results. People will suffer and people will die because of them. That is not an exaggeration; that is what has already happened, and will happen again.

And I know there is no choice but to get up today, and tomorrow, and the next day, to do the work for a better, more inclusive, more secure democracy. This is generational work. Not all of us will see the promised land in our lifetimes. But generations before us did the same: held tight to a vision of a better future, not just for themselves but for those who came after.
