Welcome back to the This Day In Esoteric Political History newsletter. Each week, a member of our team (or a friend of the show) gathers together bits of America’s past and attempts to find a throughline that might add a little understanding to our current moment.
Before we get going, as you may be hearing, the annual Radiotopia fundraiser has begun. Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far. If you can, please take the step from listener to member, and help support this show and independent media. We need it, and appreciate it!
As a great recent piece in The Atlantic lays out, Thanksgiving has always been political, going back to Abraham Lincoln’s establishment of the federal holiday amidst the Civil War.
For this year’s occasion we rounded up a dozen of our favorite Thanksgiving, meal, and food related stories to share today (including a couple that you should probably save until all the dishes have been cleared). If conversation slows this afternoon, why not tell family and friends about our show! We’d be extremely thankful…
A little more esoterica
On the topic of food, we appreciated Vincenzo’s response to our recent Red Delicious discussion. He pointed Jody to https://applerankings.com if anyone else is also ready to figure out which apple variety is perfect for them!
Thanks to listener Heather, who gave This Day a lovely shout-out after being named an Exceptional Teacher in Ann Arbor. Congrats, Heather!
Last week, a majority of you voted for us to cover something DB Cooper-related in an upcoming episode. Stay tuned (and as always, keep the show ideas coming!!)
